Talks are being held over a five and a half year contract worth over £50 million. Özil currently earns £130,000-a-week and the contract runs till 2018. However, manager Arsène Wenger considers the German midfielder to be indispensable and does not intend to cash in on him. There are also reports of Mesut Özil being named as the next Arsenal captain, however, it cannot be confirmed right now as there are some other candidates who could get preference.

Arsène Wenger will not talk about player contracts to the media until the new year but within the club, talks are ongoing.

Mesut Özil is also being monitored by various clubs in Europe including FC Bayern München. Özil is enjoying life at Arsenal and feels it is his best season yet:

"This season is the strongest season I've played. I'm in a good way and playing really well. The main thing is that you stay healthy, stay fit. I believe in myself. This season has been really good with the number of assists I have, but the most important thing is that we play well as a team and we have to try to stay at the top." - Mesut Özil

Özil is currently enjoying a small break as Arsène allowed him to go on a short holiday ahead of the busy Christmas schedule. His form is key to Arsenal's title credentials and with 13 assists already, he could well be heading towards a record-breaking season.
